A highly effective brochure design outlines what your business is about and what your business can do for it’s customers.  The primary purpose of a great brochure design is not only aesthetically pleasing but to fulfill an organisation’s needs.

Brochures can help you to expand your market and encourage leads and clients to take action.  A brochure, or leaflet, conveys information about a company, an event, a product or a service. Typically, a brochure is a single sheet that is either a bi-folded or a tri-folded.

Even though there is a large trend to move digital for you marketing efforts, print is still an important part for your marketing mix.  A powerful brochure can educate its readers, convey good credibility and authority to the company, increase the target audience, and persuade consumers to take action.

1. KNOW YOUR COMPANY’S OBJECTIVE BEFORE YOU START

In order to make your brochure effective, it’s important that you understand its purpose. Start by asking your client why they think they need a brochure and ask them to define their objectives. Get as much information about the objective of the brochure so that you can design for it.

2. KNOW YOUR TARGET MARKET

A brochure is a communication tool for your company/brand.  It is important to know who your target market is in order to meet their interests

If you’re unaware of this information, take the time to talk to your salespeople or even to your customers. Use this as a great opportunity to get to know your customer base

3. BE CREATIVE, BE UNIQUE

Creativity is important to set you apart from your competition. Aim for a design that is original and unique. Think of a design that can still stand out even when it’s shuffled with other leaflets in a rack. Strengthening the brand’s identity through creativity.

4. BE DIRECT

Keeping your customer in mind, steer clear from listing down all the achievements and successes of your company or all the information about your product or service. Too much information will just confuse your target market.

5. DESIGN FOR YOUR READERS

You need to put yourself in the shoes of the brand’s target market. If the audience is primarily males, you would not design a marketing piece in shades of pink and purple. Think of it this way: you’re serving at the pleasure of your readers.

6. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FONTS

If your company already has a signature font, then go from there. You can use that font for the entire brochure or you can add one or two more to jazz it up. The font you choose needs to be readable and legible. Make use of bold fonts for headings or highlighting important information and avoid making the body text too large or even too small.

7. CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLORS

People respond to colors differently. Some hate a particular color on sight, while others will pick up a brochure because of its colors.  If the company has signature colors, use them, then branch out to different shades and tones using the trademark colors.

8. USE SIMPLE STATEMENTS

Sometimes the simple ideas are the best. If a client has decided they want lots of cliched images to get a particular point across, it’s probably better to scrap them. The solution might be to use a typographic cover instead and make a very literal statement about what they want to say.

9. ADD APPROPRIATE IMAGES

People are visual creatures. We tend to get attracted more if we’re looking at something beautiful, intriguing, or fun.  To make the design more reader-friendly, choose appropriate and relevant photos associated with the main theme of the brochure.

Avoid using generic images. If you need to invest on paid images, then go for it. Or if you have the budget for a photo shoot for the brochure, then much better.

10. USE A HIGH-QUALITY PAPER

To make a good impression and promote confidence, mind what paper you use.  It may be pricier than regular, flimsy ones, but it will show you care for your brand and made an effort for your readers.

11. CALL-TO-ACTION

Don’t forget your call-to-action! No matter how well-designed your brochure is, if it doesn’t include a call-to-action, it won’t serve its true purpose. Always remind customers to take action once they have read the brochure

12. MAKE IT EASY FOR THE READERS TO RESPOND

Make sure that the name, website, contact information, and email of your business are visible in the brochure. If your brand has social media accounts, add them as well. It’s also a clever idea to include a QR code for the convenience of your readers.
